How to start a following outside of social media

With anything involved with advertising or building a following, I think it’s really important to build awareness before trying to get customers and fans. Try to do things that simply create curiosity around your brand, instead of trying to overtly sell them something. Nothing turns me off more than the dude on the street corner shoving a flyer into my face. Sure it works for some businesses, but a lot of the times they aren’t trying to build nice, classy brands. For example, I usually see people in NYC handing out flyers for free instant tans… not really my cup of tea. I’m not trying to generalize, but I personally find that super in-your-face advertising can easily back fire, and your brand can look obnoxious and unprofessional.
Korehira Watanabe: The Swordsmith
After I saw this video, I was compelled to add a new section to the blog called “inspiration”. Korehira Watanabe is one of the last remaining swordsmiths in Japan. He spent the majority of his life honing his skills, and through passion, discipline, and hard work he became a master of his craft. It really goes to show that you have to be passionate about what you do, and make it your life. I hope to approach my work in a similar fashion. Plus, when I’m old and grey, I want to be a badass like him.
What items can I sell besides t-shirts?

This is a really good question, but the answer obviously depends on what you consider your demographic to be. But one thing that is definitely important regardless of your demographic is that the product should be unique and professional. Try to steer clear of bandwagon products. You might make a quick buck from making a fad product, but you don’t want your brand to look like every other brand that jumps on trends.
